Office Decor

My company has moved into a new, raw office space with mushroom grey walls, polished concrete floors, and fabulous views of The Empire State Building, The Chrysler Building, and The Gilsey House.

The most important question, of course, is how to furnish it!

Here’s what I’m thinking of getting for my team:

Glass-top desk

I won’t attach the keyboard tray, but this looks more expensive than it is, my Dad likes it, and plus, when I was in my twenties I so dearly coveted the glass desk of the CEO’s assistant.

Denim-y blue Eames-y wheel-y chair

This puppy also looks very executive, is super comfortable, and adds a nice jolt of not-too-stuffy color into my little mushroom cloud.

It’s also a fraction of the cost of my original choice, plus more comfortable, and it looks more expensive:

I’m going to partition off the desks from one another (they are going to be lined up series-style on the left wall of the office) with shelving that I already own and lurfe:

Thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas?

  2. Check highbrowfurniture.com for inspiration. I’ve been using them for years and love their delivery and service.

I’ll vote against the Eames-y chair. If you can’t get authentic, don’t go knock-off. Visiting clients and prospective employees who care about these things will spot the fake and question what else might not be as it seems under the hood.

I like the Emeco aluminum seating for a raw setting like yours. Less functional (doesn’t roll) but no less beautiful.

  3. The problem is that the genuine Eames doesn’t come in the blue that I want :(

  4. You can definitely get the blue you want. Who’s telling you that they don’t come in your color?

  5. Vladi, DWR doesn’t offer the Eames in Blue Denim. So I went with Eames-inspired from AI Friedman — was also on sale for the dark brown I got for my own desk.

I asked one of my clients about your perspective — which is a good one to consider — and she said, “I dunno, I have no idea how to tell the difference and plus, I don’t want you spending my money on nice furniture!”

Her reply was kind of joking, but also kind of not.

It’s definitely something to keep in mind (buying ‘inspired by’ pieces).
